The advantages of segregation and the evolution of sex.

In diploids, sexual reproduction promotes both the segregation of alleles at the same locus and the recombination of alleles at different loci. This article is the first to investigate the possibility that sex might have evolved and been maintained to promote segregation, using a model that incorporates both a general selection regime and modifier alleles that alter an individual's allocation t...

Evolution of Inbreeding Avoidance and Inbreeding Preference through Mate Choice among Interacting Relatives.

While extensive population genetic theory predicts conditions favoring evolution of self-fertilization versus outcrossing, there is no analogous theory that predicts conditions favoring evolution of inbreeding avoidance or inbreeding preference enacted through mate choice given obligate biparental reproduction. Multiple interacting processes complicate the dynamics of alleles underlying such in...

Sexy to die for? Sexual selection and the risk of extinction

Sexual selection is a fi eld with a strong focus on the ‘costs ̓of traits. However, whether such costs have an infl uence on the demography of the population is very rarely discussed. Here we present various processes through which sexual selection might have an impact on population viability and thus increase or decrease the risk of extinction. We argue that evolutionary ‘suicide ̓— as sometimes...

Reproductive Consequences of Population Divergence through Sexual Conflict

Sexual-selection research increasingly focuses on reproductive conflicts between the sexes. Sexual conflict, divergent evolutionary interests of males and females, can cause rapid antagonistic coevolution of reproductive traits and is a potentially powerful speciation engine. This idea has theoretical and comparative support but remains controversial. Recent experimental evidence from Sepsis cy...

Run of Homozygosity a Procedure to Detecting Inbreeding in Farm Animals

Inbreeding depression is a harmful phenomenon in livestock which is outcome of inbreeding. Inbreeding is consequence mating between two individuals who are more related to each other than average relatedness in population, which results in reducing in fitness of progenies and genetic variability in populations. Development of high-density genome-wide single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) array f...
